Christopher J. Davidson, MD is a board-certified, Harvard trained plastic surgeon who performs tummy tucks and mini tummy tucks in the Boston area. Many people are bothered by excess fat and skin in the abdominal area. A tummy tuck abdominoplasty surgery) removes fat and tightens the abdomen to create a natural, firmer, flattened mid-section. A mini tummy tuck is different to a tummy tuck in that it only addresses the area below the belly button. In addition to creating a sleek silhouette, a tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck can boost your self-esteem and create a more positive self-image.

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can help create a firmer, flatter abdomen. A tummy tuck surgically removes excess fat above and below the belly button. Extra fat and skin can result following weight gain, substantial weight loss, childbirth, or aging. To create the most youthful silhouette possible, the stomach muscles are tightened during the procedure.
A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure but it can be done on an out-patient basis. During the procedure, an incision is made across the lower abdomen from hip bone to hip bone. A second incision is made around the belly button and the skin and fat are separated from the abdominal wall. Excess skin and fat are then removed and the stomach muscles are tightened. A small incision creates a new opening for the belly button, and it is brought out through the new opening in the skin. Drains are often placed into the skin and removed a few days later. The drains help to alleviate swelling by collecting any excess blood and fluid.
Mini Tummy Tuck
The area below the belly button can be particularly difficult to lose weight from, even with dieting and exercise. A mini tummy tuck is performed to remove excess fat and tissue in the lower belly only. A mini tummy tuck subtly raises excess fat and skin below the belly button, creating a more appropriately contoured lower abdomen. The mini tummy tuck is especially beneficial for women whose lower abs have been weakened by pregnancy.
A mini tummy tuck is usually more effective for those within 10% of their ideal body weight. The procedure is less invasive than a full tummy tuck. In a full tummy tuck, an incision is made around the navel and across the lower abdomen. With a mini tummy tuck, the navel is left intact and the overall incision is smaller. The muscles can also be tightened during a mini tummy tuck, though not quite as effectively as during a full tummy tuck. Learn more about a mini tummy tuck.
